First, are you required to pay a monthly fee for savings and checking account? If so, you may be better off to invest your savings in a CD or bond that earns more interest. You may also want to search around to find a bank that does not charge you these monthly fees. You should strive to have your funds in a bank that offers free checking, with a small minimum balance requirement. These banking services are available. You just have to shop around for them.

You should check to see how much you are being charged for your checks. If you go through many checks per year, you may save money if you order checks through a discounter, than to pay your bank for supplying them. Your banking services should also include no charge ATM fees. If you do many transactions through ATMs at a cost of $1.00 or more per transaction, you are throwing your money away.
